There are so many reasons to visit Montreal. The city is home to so many amazing restaurants, galleries, shops, clubs and bars. One of the most surprising things about Montreal is that they have a very active art community - meaning you can find your perfect painting or sculpture at every turn. It's often difficult for artists in other cities or countries to find collectors in their area or venues for their work. In Montreal there are tons of opportunities for artists looking to exhibit their work, sell it locally and internationally, seek sponsorship from various galleries etc... I was lucky enough to find out about the newly opened Gallery On The Common. Located in the heart of the Plateau neighbourhood of Montreal, this newly opened gallery is located on a new building on an old city market. As you enter the gallery, you are greeted by two giant canvasses mounted by the entrance and inside covers a wall that is filled with works from local and international artists. I found myself drawn to two pieces that were tucked away in another section of the exhibition: "Roms 3ds" and "La Nouvelle Maison De Style". "Roms 3ds" is a series of paintings inspired by pop-culture icons such as Rambo, Superman and Rambo Rambo. Each of the pieces alludes to the subject's popularity and commonly associated colours. Those familiar with these subjects will be able to make out what they are meant to represent. "La Nouvelle Maison De Style" is a series of paintings that takes cues from the decorative styles found in mid-century Montreal homes. Each piece would look great on a wall in any Montreal house or apartment that incorporates this aesthetic, however it also stands alone as an artwork that could be hung at home, workplace or even at school for décor purposes. I had an opportunity to sit down with the artist responsible for these two pieces, Akseli Gadin, who was kind enough to give me some insight on his work. I was immediately drawn to these pieces because of their level of detail and intricacies. You can see all the time that you've put into them through the colour combinations and linework. This is something that I don't see in a lot of other pieces. Could you tell me the process behind creating your art? How do you come up with new ideas? "I usually start my work by doing some sketches on paper, then I proceed to paint on canvas. Afterwards I print them on A3 paper and draw them digitally on the computer. It's easier to go back and forth if something needs fixing or changing." "I usually try to capture a moment or feeling that I had during the creation process even if it was random. For example, for this painting "La Nouvelle Maison Du Style", I decided I wanted everything white in the background so it didn't really take much time to finish this piece.
